Healthcare Providers

AFAP is dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to quality instruction and ongoing support for fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) of contraception, conception, and health monitoring.  Health care providers are often the first contact for discussions around family planning options and we recognize that the majority of providers are not trained to provide education around FABMs nor are they able to allocate the time needed to do so.

We envision a world where:

  • Any person can approach their healthcare provider(s) for support in using FABMs, have that choice respected, and be connected with qualified instruction.
  • Healthcare providers are aware of the potential for high efficacy of FABMs as a contraceptive option, when the method is used correctly.
  • Those with conception challenges are offered the opportunity to consult with a qualified fertility awareness educator for fertility support before entering the costly and stressful process of assisted reproductive technology (ART).
  • Healthcare providers value the contribution of fertility awareness educators to their patient’s treatment plan

As a healthcare provider, how can you support your clients in accessing professional FABM instruction to set them up for success?

  • Refer your client to our educator directory
  • If you are a physician in the US, your patient’s health insurance is most likely required to cover fertility-awareness education under the Affordable Care Act*. Your practice can bill health insurance for education provided by an FAE incident to you as the patient’s physician
  • Contact us about collaboration with your clinic, practice, or organization
  • Connect your staff with training
  • If your organization publishes content about contraception, make sure that FABMs are accurately presented along with other non-hormonal options.
  • Consider becoming a Fertility Awareness Educator (FAE) yourself
  • Contact us to let us know how we can support you
